Sourav Banerjee

Sourav Banerjee, the Country Director of Room to Read India, provides oversight at the country level and represents the organization to governments, donors, and other stakeholders. He leads a multidisciplinary team of around 500 staff across nine states of India. Sourav has been instrumental in shaping the growth of Room to Read in India and scaling up its programs in collaboration with governments. He brings in a high level of strategic thinking and a strong desire to bring systemic change in education.

Sourav has 25+ years of experience in the elementary education sector, working for government, non-government, and donor organizations. Before Room to Read, Sourav worked with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where he led conceptualizing, designing, and managing education and skill development activities. He was also closely associated with the initial planning, implementation, and monitoring of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), a flagship Government of India program for universal elementary education and the world's most extensive education reform program. Sourav has participated in various program Review Missions as a Government of India and a World Bank nominee and has served in multiple government committees at different points in time.

By training, Sourav is an architect and practiced architecture before moving into the education sector.
